Paper maps - best for Balkans?

I'd like some help finding maps covering The Balkans. Ideally they would show camping points, scenic lookout info, roads and trail/tracks, as well as border crossings. I'm worried that a regular road atlas will hide some interesting dual-sport areas and be more inclined towards motorways.

Any help much appreciated. Cheers - Martin

The maps i bought in Macedonia and BiH last year were pretty limited in detail and choice of scale, so the off-roading i stumbled upon was of the head-up-into-the-hills-until-the-tarmac-ran-out-and-follow-your-nose variety (with some nice results, though ). Check out Stanfords...

The maps from Reise Know-How Verlag online » Reiseführer - Bücher - Landkarten are the best I could find for the southern Balcans. They are (mostly) correct - most published maps are rather inexact or just plain wrong. This might be a result of past times when the government of those countries deliberately published incorrect maps for the public so that any foe would be mislead. Nowadays in the times of google earth and the like it has become irrelevant, but the old maps are still copied...

Unfortunately the "Reise Know-how" maps do not show any camp sites or scenic routes, but what makes the especially useful to bikers is the material they are made of. They are pretty waterproof, they do not tear easily and can be folded without damaging the print.

Thanks gents.

Pottsy, I see there is a Stanfords in Covent Garden so I shall pop in there soon - thanks for the heads up.

Vaufi - very helpful, especially the idea that some of the maps out there may be purposely inaccurate. Have you had any problems with 'Freytag & Berndt' maps?

Freytag & Berndt is my second choice after Reise Know-how maps.

For Romania I found a road atlas published by F&B freytag & berndt - Weitere Staaten - Rumänien Superatlas which was very detailed and mostly correct. But as far as I know they do not ofer any such detailed maps for the Balcan countries.

To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.
