SatNav Novice Zumo550, maps of the America's & assistance req'd.

Hello, I have a Garmin Zumo 550 which I’ve used once to get me to Hamburg, once to the HU meeting in Ripley & that's about it. However, come summer I’m planning on riding across North America, Canada & hopefully up to Alaska then South on the Pan Am so I want to upload the maps covering as much of the journey as possible. I know N.America is covered & maps for Central & South aren’t as comprehensive. Unfortunately I am a complete sat nav novice & so my questions are;

Do I have to delete the existing Euro maps to allow me to upload any new maps or will additional memory cards do the job?
Is it better to pay & get the maps I need from Garmin direct, or from alternative sources?
Apologies for being naïve, any assistance appreciated.

Go to : GPS Maps and download Caribbean maps which cover parts of Central America. Run the file and copy to an SD card and when you plug into your Zumo, goto settings for maps and enable the maps on the SD card.

Thumbs up

Before you start: did you get the maps on your Zumo on CD/DVD? If not it's a good idea to make a backup copy, in case you accidentally delete them, which is easy to do.

Connect your Zumo to a PC. It will show up as a drive, like E:. There is a folder \Garmin and in there is a big file called GMAPSUPP.IMG. Copy that to your PC, it contains your current map set.

You need the Mapsource program. If you don't have it here is how to get it:

Membership - help keep us going!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
