3 New Michelin Africa Maps

I see Michelin in their wisdom have just replaced the old 953/954/955 with 741/745/746 respectively.

Are these maps actually revisions, or is it just a re-numbering excercise? Looking at the 741(953), the sheets have been re-printed, as the map borders and covers have changed, and it does say on the sheet that it is a 1st edition, published Jan 2003, but at a quick glance I cannot see any change in the map itself.

I tried to order the 95x series about a month ago and was told that Michelin were completely updating and reprinting them. This was from the head Michelin liason guy in Stanfords, London.

Are the new ones out yet? I wanted to use them to make my route a bit more detailed...

Yes, I just bought the set of 3 from www.amazon.co.uk. Only thing is, although I haven't gone over them with a fine tooth comb, I can't see a difference.

There is even a small bit of a latitude line missing on both maps at 36.0N 11.5W!

I thought they might even have updated just notes such as that regarding the Dakhla convoy, but it doesn't appear so.

I would be interested if anyone is aware of any revisions. I have emailed and faxed Michelin in France, but no replies yet. I will update here if I get any info.

I've had a close look at the new Mich 741 map which just replaced the 953 and, compared to the 2002 edition of the 953 (quite a good update on previous editions), the 741 is the same map - for better or for worse - with a new cover, number and price (4.49). Roads sealed in recent years have not been added and their are still scores of pistes marked with inaccurate emphasis which will continue to send first timers up the creek.
It's still best best map for route planning and main road driving in North and West Africa, of course.

Membership - help keep us going!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
