Africa in a Ex-British army Lightweight
Has anyone undertaken an expedition in Africa in a Land Rover Lightweight, series 3, 24 volt, 2.25l, oil cooler, soft top, original ex-army?
In March I returned from 5 months in West Africa (Transatlantic route - Ghana) in my series 3 civilian, SWB, Station wagon, 11000 kms in total. I would now like to plan a trip from the other side, i.e. from Tunisia, through southern Algeria, Niger and into Benin. My idea is to fully prepare the vehicle with additional gerry can holders, extra water tanks, better seats but keeping the soft top and fitting an internal cage to avoid theft, the canvas will get slashed I am sure but this is not a problem.
To date I have not heard or even been told of anyone using a Lightweight as an expedition vehicle. I am trying to get some solid first hand experience from people who have done it. My other big worry is the 24 volt spare parts and how effective they are in arduous conditions especially the 90amp generator and starter motor. I will get new or reconditioned ones prior to leaving and carry one spare of each! Oh the weight!!****
Thanks for any advice.
Kind regards,
Andy
