Question Agadez-tunis / Many Questions

Hi all

I am planning to go to dakar, senegal this summer. From there I want to go through Mali to Niger and take the agadez-tunis route. I don't have my own vehicle so I will be depending on other means.

Can anyone help me with the following questions.

1) Is it possible to buy a Malian visa in Dakar, a Nigerese visa in Mali, an Algerian visa in Niger, etc or do I have to buy all of them in the respective embassies in Brussels (where I live) or can I buy all of them in Dakar only, or in Bamako only?

2) Is this route still a relatively safe route?

3) Is it easy, when being in Agadez, to find other travellers to share expenses with? In other words, are many people doing this?

4) What are the means of transportation for crossing the Sahara? Are there buses or do I have to rent a guide and 4WD truck?

5) Is it easy to arrange everything myself on the spot or do I need help from travel agencies on the internet?

Thanking you in advance!

Jelle

Hi Jelle

1. AFAIK you can get them in preceding countries, but Brux may be better for Niger and Alg.

2. From Tahoua (or so) to Assamaka you may be a problem to them, or they will put you in a bus with a convoy.

3. If you mean other backpackers, in summer I don't think so. And not many European 4WDers either.

4. From Agadez to Assamaka or even to IGZ there will be trucks. From Algerian border (IGZ) you will have to have an expensive escort right across Algeria (which may cause you to reconsider your plan).

5. Only for Algeria must you organise in advance.

We all like an adventure but IMO summer is not the time to do this. Travelling will be exhausting. It is common to underestimate how draining the heat will be on your health. Even the locals avoid travelling long distances in summer. And avoid the Ramadan time especially

Membership - help keep us going!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
