Algeria to Libya, January 2010

Hi everybody,
I plan to travel from Alicante to Oran mid-late january next year. What I would like to do is travel SE from Oran and cut straight into Libya at Ghadarmes, so I can see a little bit of the sahara and hopefully some dunes that (as far as I can see) are around this area. Now I know very little about Algerian foreign policy and I was wondering whether I needed a guide to get me from Oran down to the crossing at Ghadarmes, I will be travelling solo. also does anyone have any information on the crossing there? and would it be fairly straight-forward? I'm applying for visa's to Algeria and Libya in the UK, to give me a head start. Also any general information about this part of Algeria would be a great help, thanks,

Nick

Yes, there isn't one for the likes of you and me. The only crossing into west Libya is on the Tunisian coast.

There is some great road riding in Algeria for sure, but I'm afraid on a moto the expense of mandatory escorts put the kybosh on things as they do in Libya, especially on a moto.

You may also want to think twice about riding in the Tizi Ouzou province of north eastern Algeria for any longer than necessary, even with an escort.

You'll see dunes in southern Tunisia or around El Oued

Thanks Chris,
Do I need a guide throughout Libya then? Because this trip will take me all the way to South Africa via Egypt and Sudan I will need to find another way. So I'm guessing the best route would be cross from Sicily to Tunis and Ride into Libya that way? I know they have changed visa requirements to Libya, but I'm unsure about guides. Do you know if I have to give them an Itinerary still? when I contacted a visa agency for advice (they seemed much more helpful than the embassy over here) I was told i needed to give them a specific route of where I was planning to go, but no mention of guides. thanks,

Nick

Hi Nick,

Do I need a guide throughout Libya then?

AFAIK, though rarely some manage to transit the north without. Things happen quicker if you stump up for the escort.

... I'm guessing the best route would be cross from Sicily to Tunis and Ride into Libya that way?

Genoa (or more expensively Marseille) to Tunis is the norm, actually.

I know they have changed visa requirements to Libya, but I'm unsure about guides.

Someone with more recent experience in Libya will chip in soon enough about escorts. The regs will probably change again before you get there but escorts have been the rule for a while.
