I heard the same thing today. It really is getting more and more difficult to get to South Africa by the eastern route.
I contacted Tidwa tours tonight asking them if they stopped issueing the visa's.

I got a reply today from Tidwa about a question concerning our carnets for Libya. I asked them about the visa's and hope to get an answer soon.

I got an almost immediate reply from Ben. He assured me that there wasn't a problem with getting the visa's.

Please post when you actually got the visa and what the requirements are. I'm still in West-Africa, but it is my preferred route to return to Europe.
Cheers from Lomé,
Gee

Hi Guys ,
I rode through Libya last year.. I found one of the most friendliest countries I have ever been to.. Don't believe the rubbish you see on the news. Go there and you will be presently surprised.
Email Masoud for info and visas, He'll sort you out. He even met me at the border and I spent the first night there in his home. He's a very nice and helpful guy.

I try to collect the travellers who did travel through Lybia recently:
4x4tripping: Howto reach the eastern route of africa
And generally how the people start their transafrica over the east, how they cross or avoid egypt.

I second that. I've been through Tunisia - Libya - Egypt in December on my way to Cape Town, and Libya was definitely one of the highlights.

So I need to have confirmation about that point because my plan is to comme back from Sudan to Europe with my 4x4 through Egypt then Israel the ferry to Greece.
Any experience from other travellers?
Thanks in advance.

BTW I've heard that travelling through Lybia is not very secure nowadays even along the coastal road (though I believe that Lybian people are very friendly towars foreigner travellers: I've been there 2 times but before 2010).
