Arlit To Assamaka Road to be Paved?
Financing the construction of the road-Arlit Assamaka
Financement de la construction de la route Arlit-Assamaka - Temoust.org | Le portail du peuple touareg berbère Kel Tamasheq
Anybody find more articles on this?
I wonder if this is all to do with the intended Trans Saharan Pipeline that is in the offing and the need for security to protect it? I guess they would want to run it alongside the paved highway through Nigeria upto Zinder, Agadez, Arlit, Assamaka, to Tamanrasset then north.

The project will also enhance peace and security, combat crimes and all kinds of trafficking, says the Algeria minister in charge of Maghreb and African Affairs.
On the uncompleted 223km, the joint committee in charge of the project will meet next month in Niamey, Niger to consider the funding options.
“This will be the occasion to discuss and search for adequate formula to finance the remaining of the project,” said Mr Ali Boukhari, the director of public works in Niger.
Currently, there is a financial shortfall, but with the region’s resources- Niger has the second potential production site of uranium in the world – investors are likely to be interested.

Maybe this decade then.

Between 2004 and 2009, Algeria allocated $1 billion for the construction of 2,400km from the north to extreme south of the country, for the first time ever
Actually the road had reached Tam (with a few wash outs) in the early 80s and I recall roadworks and fresh tarmac south out of Tam in 82.
There have certainly been improvements in recent years like in Arak, but assuming Tam to In Guezzam is all sealed now - is that correct? - it took them nearly 30 years to do it.
Whatever, let's hope it improves prospects for the area, especially north Niger.

Membership - help keep us going!
Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.
You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
