Car sale Chad / Burkina / Niger
We want to get rid of our old Volkswagen Golf in one of these countries. Which one is the best in terms of paperwork and custom hassle?
Its not about getting much money for it, but just leaving it there.

Is any other country in that area better?

Sorry but I seriously object to this; this is half the reason the Senegalese banned vehicles over 5 years old entering ...

You can't just drive it down to leave it in someone else's backyard as waste

Objection to objection
as a seasoned traveller you seem to be you should know that a car that has made all the way through the desert is not "waste" but will go on doing good service for many years in Africa.
My term "sell" suggests that I don't want to "dump my waste" but to give it to someone who wants to use it. So I can't see anything immoral about it.
Perhaps you shoud spend some time at a pier of an African harbour and watch what kind of "waste" is shipped down to African countries for good money.

hi kira,

the real reason the senegalese banned the import is,
that they see no other chance to sell their indian(tata)/senegalese
coproduced cars/trucks/buses. it´s just to protect the market, because otherwise nobody would buy them...because of the well known indian quality.
forget about environment, nobody cares, a brand new tata is much worse about exhaust emissions than most of the so called european "waste".

You can discard , abandon , or sell easily your car in Mali , Burkina , Niger or Chad , as none of these countries write down the vehicle details on your passport. absolutely no worries at all. so custom-wise you won;t have any hassle.

Niger seems a better choice to sell a car . Niamey looks quite "rich" , surprisingly , and there are hords of car buyers asking constantly to buy your car.

I dont think you can make it at all to Chad in a VWagen . I would be extremely surprised if you make it to Njamena *I understand that you plan to do the lake tchad route )

It was that I objected to, you are right, they will drive anything - but if you're not worried about money but 'getting rid' of the vehicle, why not find someone to give it to??? I know a few people in W.Africa who need a vehicle (but not on your route unfortunately!)

what is the difference between giving wehicle to somebody for nothing from giving money to border officials for not anoying you too much?
Nothing personal, but I think thats the big african problem - they are waiting for somebody else to give things, be that UN food programme, or pen for the kids. So SELL your car. It will make somebody happy anyway.

FWIW, I agree with selling it rather than giving it - the new owner will hopefully take better care of something they have bought. by all means spend the money in the local economy - unlike some of the UN/WB that I met on my trips: many of them bought imported produce from white/asian shopping centres

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB.
