Carnet De Passage
We are considering taking a Bedford 4 ton truck from Tunisia thro Libya onwards thro Jordan Saudi Syria IRAN Pakistan to India. Can any one give us any info about Carnet de Passage for any/all of these countries? In particular, are there any of these countries that calculate the Carnet from the NEW price of the vehicle??

Saudi Arabia, Jordan and Syria all use the International Carnet de Passage. Last year, I drove from the UAE to Jordan and Syria and this was the document everybody was interested in. The document I had was good from the UAE to the UK if needed.
To the best of my knowledge, Iran does not recognise the Carnet de Passage. I expect that you will have to pay some sort of import duty on the border, but I don't know for certain.
Good luck,

I led the London to Sydney Overland Expedition in 98/99. Part of the route was Turkey-Iran-Pakistan-India.
Iran uses the CDP, so do the others. India is your problem child. The RAC refuse to issue CDP for India (the AA are okay) , because they ask 400% the value of the vehicle - so your deposit is potentially pricey.
If you want more info, see WWW.LSOEXPED.COM and my tel no.:

Vintage John, the price for 'local' CdPs for Libya and Egypt are in the book somewhere - Libya is (WAS?) cheap, Egypt is famously a hassle.

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.
