The Bradt overland guide (p93) and also the German automobile association
(ADAC,
http://www.adac.de/ReiseService/tourset_reisefuehrer/tipps/Carnet_de_Passage/Carnet_e.asp?ComponentID=79913&SourcePageID=79838)
tell that in West Africa you don't need a "carnet de passage", you do need
however a 'carte gris' ('grey card') that is basically your ownership papers.
At the borders of west african countries you can buy a 'laissez passage'
('let through') for a small fee.

If you have any doubts then you can ofcourse always phone your local consulate or embassy

good luck

I can confirm that no carnet is required for Niger , nor Chad , Burkina, Mali , Mauri , Morocco , GuinaBis , guineaCon , Algerie , Nigeria , Cameroon , etc..

Senegal is easening that 5 years old rule (only enforced in Rosso , go via Diama )

Latest news in my forum , is that carnet for Ghanna is no longer required neither.

Have a good Day

Hi , Sam
well , the 5 year old rule its still enforced , but is not what it used to be . I have been there 4 times the last 12 months and ... I could bring in vehicles older than 5 years.

Ammount of "bribes' were

1 ... 50 Euros + a Broken Car Stereo
2... Set of 2 "golden" gift Watches (10 Australian $!)
3... 75 Euros (as I was in a hurry and I didnt even try to discuss the price)
4 ... 15 Euros + 2 cheapo Halfords's headlamps (20 Quid ?)

Trick is of course " I don't have any money , only credit cars , blah blah blah , I only have *THIS* ammount (15 Euros ?) to get to SanLuis , blah blah blah
where I can get money again , but now .. this is all that I got ( showing your nearly empty wallet , helps a lot )
and that is. More often than not , they let you in by a small "tocken" and the money . In my experience , broken / old radio stereos work like a charm.

yep , yep , I know we shouldnt encourage bribbery , but -having said that - I feel better paying 50Euros plus a shitty stereo to a poor man than 250 quid to the RAC.

Have a nice day.

YEP ,the 5-year-old rule for the north border of Senegal , also applies to motorcycles. Every other country of West Africa , or even other borders (South , East ) of Senegal , dont require carnet any more.

Have a nice day

yep (I presume you are talking about Senegal) . Other countries don't give a damm about the Carnet.

as long as you enter Senegal via Kidira (Mali) , or Farafeni / Barra (from Gambia ) or Diama (from Mauritania ) ,you will be ok . You will have to pay ... from 5 Euros to 75 Euros , but either case is nothing compared with what a carnet cost.

have a nice day.

Membership - help keep us going!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
