Carnet in LIBIA

Do I need a Carnet de Passage in Libia?
Is the guide compulsory? I will probably travel alone on motobike.
Thanks in advance for your answer.

You get it at the border.
Yes.
Alone on a motorbike? Get some jerrycans of fuel and water, that's all you will need :O

When I was in Lybia in 2002 the carnet was mandatory and indeed it was stamped by the border officers. You couldn't get it at the border but you needed to obtain it in advance, possibly in your country.

If you travel alone on the main roads it's possible they allow you to travel without a guide. Since this is stil an open question, you should find it out before departure, when you require the visa. In 2002 we didn't have any guide because it was not mandatory for groups up to 4 people (we where in two, on one bike).

If you plan to travel on the main road on the coast from Tunisia to Egypt (and I guess everywhere in the country on main roads), you don't need jerricans with extra fuel or water.

Was there Oct/Nov 05.

Carnet, compulsory local insurance and (cool green) local registration plates delivered at the border. I had a visa as I got there.

Traveling alone - not at all a safety issue - very nice people, very welcoming and open. But seeing someone by himself will seem odd to most (I travelled back on my own due to my cousin's tired Africa Twin deciding to do the return journey on the back of a pickup - I had no problem whatsoever, but had often to explain how come I was travelling alone).

Guide - none needed, although strongly expected by authorities. Once you get south (Sabha and further, you will need a guide, particularly if you intend to go to the Fezzan / Akakus - and if you do, do not underestimate the desert - so take a local guide - I had a fantastic touareg).

Man, just telling about it makes me wanting to go back!

Membership - help keep us going!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
