Christmas Holidays......
...If you were tied to travelling during the school holidays (roughly Dec 11th 2002 - Jan 11th 2003), and had to leave and return from the UK, where would you go?
My girlfriend is a teacher and we're thinking of doing a trip in our Landy to N Africa. Spent a month in Morocco last year, so keen to try somewhere new...

Hi - why not from Tunisia to Algeria?
Think about an early reservation for the Ferry!!! Marseille or Genova...

Sula's point about ferry bookings is a very valid one. Last year, booking 5 months in advance there was not one vehicle space on any ferry over an entire 6 week period (summer holidays that time)!
I would imagine that Xmas is similar?
Sam.

Hi
I'd echo Petes thoughts of Libya - fabulous country to visit
Around the same time as that we are looking at either Algeria or Libya (for the 2nd time) for this coming xmas so we might see you on the ferry :-)

If you had to choose between Libya and Algeria for that period, which would you choose?
Am I right in thinking we'll be all right going on our own as there'll be plenty of other travellers around at that time? We were thinking of following the routes in Chris Scott's book.
Thanks

You'll be fine in Algeria as long as your vehicle is up to it. Algeria has it all.
As you may know the book's routes have nearly all been updated and expanded, all with GPS. See www.sahara... /updates

Sorry to bring this back to the top, but reading about the concerns re: doing Morocco in two weeks made me think:
UK - Algeria - UK in three and a half weeks?? Sensible? Or would we be better to go skiing instead!?

Driving fairly hard, it will take you five days to get from Calais to El-Oued and another five days vice versa. This takes into account ferry time (Genoa-Tunis) and border crossing delays.
You might be able to shave a day off using the Marseille-Tunis ferry and driving straight from Tunis to Nefta, I’m not sure.
I’ve emailed you distances and timings from my trip in 2000.
