... and even then he got very sick.

It was asked before here levelo, possibly even by that NL guy, so your recent posts and the old thread merged to keep it all together.

Route description here.

Thanks Chris, that is very helpful! The link is informative and it answers several of my questions.
- The main piste looks too sandy for bicycles but the space between the tracks might be ridable. Back in 1995 in Northern Sudan I followed the railway tracks between Port Sudan and Atbara in the Nile Valley. Not easy, but the only way through.
-There is water along the way in at least 4 places. I can probably carry 2/3 days worth of water (15 to 20 litres).
My other concerns are safety along the way (one is way more vulnerable in the saddle than behind the wheel) and the Mauritanian authorities who could object to my wandering off the main tarmac road...

Chris, I am now cycling down Morocco and will be in Mauri in November. I am still considering riding along the railway tracks. All the info you had given me/us about that piste (mileage, distances between settlements, water...à seems to have disappeared. Could you post it once more please ? Thanks.

I'm not sure what's disappeared, Levelo but may be others can add recent info.

There is this old R/D: http://www.sahara-overland.com/count...a-Route-R2.jpg

And this map: Railway Piste - Route R2 to Atar, Mauritania - Google Maps

As the guy said earlier: "Riding [in between] the rail road tracks wouldn't be much easier on a bicycle. It's fist-sized rocks [covering the sleepers]"

Thanks Chris, this is what I wanted. Not decided yet whether I am going to go that way or whether the Mauri authorities would let me go but I just wanted to have the info handy just in case.

Membership - help keep us going!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
