hi
for the visa you have to go to the libyan embassy in Cairo with a letter of recommandation-or-so of your embassy.
If you are lucky you can get a transit-visa with no guide, if you are less lucky you have to show also an invitation letter of a libyan agency to enter the country and if you are like everybody else, you have to take a guide all the time you are in Libya
Good luck

We managed two weeks in Libya without a guide in 2002/3. It was by 'arrangement' with our guides. Not easy, but as many people told us: in Libya most things can be arranged if you drink enough coffee with the right people. Worth asking when you get there.

Hi Richard,
agree the situation in 2002/3 but in the meantime many things changed. The latest:
No visa for US-Citizens.

Does anyone have any information about how easy the Libyan visa is to get in Cairo and how long it takes?
Is it necessary to have your passport translated into Arabic?
I am travelling on a Australian passport and am slightly concerned that this new edict about US citizens may soon apply to Australians.

hi Matt
it takes you between 2 and 3 weeks. Usually the passport has not to be translated in arabic anymore. But it can be very helpful at controls in Libya!
Good luck

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.
