I did the opposite ruote in 2002, from Tunisia to Egypt, across Lybia, and then to Jordan, Syria, etc.
The problem in Lybia is the visa. You cannot apply at the border, but you need a lot of burocratic stuff. Additionally, rules change all the time.
When we went there, for instance, the escort of a policeman and a guide was not mandatory for motorcycle, but now it seems that nobody can enter in Lybia without hiring a guide and a policeman, and it cost, of course.
The best thing you can do is asking to a Lybian embassy or consulate. I'm pretty sure you can find one in Damascus or Amman.

I was assured that all was well with my invitation by Sari Travel, before I left the UK.

They kept me waiting in southern Tunisia for nearly 3 weeks, telling me every day that they would fax the documents the next day (I now know my way around Douz / El Hamma / Ksar Ghilane / J'bil pretty well). They never arrived.

I ended up flying my bike directly to Cairo, thoroughly pissed off with the whole Libyan arrangement.

As it turned out, I could visit Jordan, but Syria was temporarily completely closed to Brits from the south and east, so there was no way into Turkey for me. I spent a wonderful 5 weeks in Egypt before illness forced me onto a plane home, with my bike in the hold once again.

Do not underestimate the Tunis > Libya > Egypt ... > Syria part of the world. I prepared to death, did everything right and paid all of the right people at the right times, and it STILL didn't work out.

...loved the trip though.

When did you travel?

In summer 2002 we made the Round the Med trip (Tunisia, Lybia, Egypt, Jordan, Syria, Turkey, Greece, Italy) WITHOUT problems at all!

We had all the visa in advance and wasted many hours at the borders, but at the end the trip was very easy and straightforward.

Maybe we were lucky and we found the right agency to get the Lybian visa, I don't know, but I heard of many other people that - with the right documents - were able to go through Libya quite easily.

If somebody need it, I can suggest the agency we used. They worked for us also in other and much more difficult trips (Central Asia and Caucasus) and they have been always very efficient and reliable.

We travelled on one bike, a BMW R 1100 GS, my wife and me, without any other companion or escort.

The agency is "I viaggi del Sogno", in Trento (I'm sure they speak english). Phone: +39 0461 983 469, or email: duccia@viaggidelsogno.it Ask for Duccia.

Rules change all the time. When we went there, the escort of a policeman and a guide was not mandatory for motorcycles, and we had only assistance at the border Tunisia/Lybia (mandatory, but very useful). Now the situation is not clear, but I'm sure Duccia has updated information.

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.
