A length of plastic hose aso comes handy to decant fuel rather than having to handle the heavy jerries. I guess with an extra two cans you should be able to double your range.

If you get into difficulties, if you have a hose with you you can always bargain with a passing truck for 5-10 litres of diesel. My experience is that a 100% premium is the usual going rate, which at current Egyptian diesel prices is not very much... Typically for that premium you will also find someone with a couple of full 200l drums in their back yard very quickly in Baharyia or Dakhla. Farafra can be genuinely difficult sometimes.
Thanks for this- all good to know.

Yes there is a problem with deisel in Western Desert.

We have just returned from the Western Desert, we went north to South, there were very long queues at every oasis. Even tour companies are struggling.
However as tourists we managed to top up at 3 oasis with little queueing due to the kindness of the Egyptians who allowed us to go to the head of the queue in Bahariya, In Mut we came across a very small queue at the back end of town and topped up, then in Khaga the tourist police took us to a place to fill up with no queue, it was for emergency vehicles only. they told us to always check with the tourist police who will help get diesel.
The tourist police escorted us in a couple of sections from Kharga to Luxor, but not a problem as they just followed on behind. Have a great time, we agree with the above comments to carry extra jerry cans or containers.

To add to the above shortages now in Aswan very hard to find fuel and Luxor the only choice seems to be the black market. Fill up were ever you can.

Sorry, Nick, for not answering earlier - we have just entered Sudan and I did not have access to the web for the last days.

Nothing is certain in Egypt. But if you ask around, people will certainly help - especially when you show up with a tuk-tuk. The main factor is time. At some moment, Diesel will eventually arrive - but this then causes havoc because everybody rushes to the pump (I have seen bitter fights). Nevertheless, as a foreigner you should benefit from the hospitality of the Egyptians and get your diesel. I would not invest in an extra tank, probably rather in some jerry cans (if you can store them).

Greetings from Dongola
Achim

Membership - help keep us going!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
