Egypt without CARNET - My idea works
Hi,
this summer I plan to buy me a small second hand Motorbike (150ccm, 600 EUR) in Kenya, either in Mombasa or Nairobi and drive it back to europe via egypt.
Due to the fact that i will buy my bike in kenya i cannot apply for a carnet in advance therefore I have to travel without a carnet.
The only thing I have to do, when I am traveling the border of egypt, I will cross the border without my motorbike. Thats it.
No you are wondering, what happen to the motorbike ?
It will be imported by a friend with egypt nationality, the same day. He only have to pay the ordinary tax fee for this small motorbike. He dont need a carnet or some difficult paperwork.
Once I am in egypt, my friend will order a new registration and I can go on driving.
So simpel.

One slight problem.....
When you leave Egypt (I assume you are going into either Jordan or Libya), then I assume the bike will still be in the name of your Egyptian friend?
If this is the case, then I expect you will then have some hassles with customs at either border crossing if the vehicle has Egyptian plates and is not in your name.
I hope it works for you, but make sure if the bike remains in your friend's name after you leave Egypt that you have some form of document confirming you are allowed to ride the bike.

Hi Matt Roach,
no I will rebuy my bike from him "officially" shortly after we crossed the border. We will setting up a buying contract, like I did in Kenya, when I bought my bike. Its a private selling.

Sweeeet. I reckon you're mate should set up a service for others. Could make a bit of coin for him. Should be cheaper than the alternative.

another option...
... would be getting yourself a camel's skin in Sudan to dress the bike up before arriving at the border control. Oh, remember to pick one that smiles!

Membership - help keep us going!
Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.
You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
