Egypt without carnet possible?

Entering probably from Jordan, in a MB bus, is it possible, or has anyone ever attempted/accomplished to enter Egypt without a Carnet? What are the procedures? Thanks vm Manfred, in Toulouse

Hi

I met some Finnish people who did this. It was very difficult, and they only got a 4 day transit permit, and had to travel with a guide....

Search the HUBB for shortest trip across Africa or similar, as I can recall seeing a post from them relating to their 23 days Cairo to Cape Town....

Thing is I want to stay 6 months or longer in Egypt

I know of stories that they grant the occasional short term transit visa. I'd like to keep my van for poss onward travels to Ethiopia, the Saudi peninsulah and Iran and India. All this is far away. Carnets are ristricting as they expire after 1 year. Appreciate any comment or hint on other options. Manfred

Renewing Carnet

I have been told that it is possible to renew a carnet remotely, at least for a second year.

so the carnet option might be as restricting as you think

the name is Bond, Big Bond

I believe with carnets the option is always to pay the huge bond. And Egypt is as high as anywhere - 4- or 800%?

Carnet de Passages

hi
it depends on the automobil club how much you have to deposit.
In Switzerland it is 100%, in Germany less than 100% see
Wüstenschiff :: Thema anzeigen - Carnet de Passage für Ägypten
in France it is 250%!
You can also get some kind of carnet at the border for 2900 Euro but the problem is to get this money back when you leave Egypt.

Egypt without Carnet

Hi Manfred,

yes there are people who have entered without a carnet, the problem is that it all depends on the mood of the customs officials in charge. We entered Egypt about month ago and it took 4 days to get the vehicle in with the correct carnet, you don't really want to get stuck with this kind of paper work in Nuweiba. We had to put 200% down so we simply got 2 carnets, one for Egypt and one for the rest of the trip, so once we are out of Egypt we can send the completed one for Egypt back by courier and our money will be returned, the rest of the trip we will then do on the 2nd carnet. I believe this is the most logical way of doing it, I think.
