One Saturday last autumn, the phone went. "John? Richard. I'm suffering from risk-deprivation. We're mounting an expedition into interesting parts of the Sahara and you're coming with us." When land-speed record-holder Richard Noble starts using terms like "interesting" the prudent run a mile. Nevertheless, a few weeks later found us loading two bright orange Defenders, for which a 6,000-mile odyssey lay ahead.
These were not ordinary Defenders. Nor were the expedition members ordinary: ex-paratrooper and veteran explorer Kit Constable Maxwell, Ray Bird, still exploring the world's remotest places at 83, Land Rover fanatics Crispin Clay and Simon Montford, each with special forces connections or overland expedition experience. Even retired lawyer Nick Robinson had spent previous time in Libya's deserts.
