Ghat - Djanet open?

hi Sam
IF you have a real visa for Libya (not only the stampthing from the border)
IF you have the algerian visa in your passport
IF you find a TO willing to help you...
YES!

Exclamation Lybia's southern borders

It seems that all these borders ( to Niger and Algeria ) are now closed for tourists. Some groups who tried to cross the border near Tummu in last November had to go back to Tunisia and Algeria .
I've planned to go to Niger via Lybia in February and I prefer to cross Algerian/Nigerian border because , like this , I have a lot more chance to go to Niger .
Does anybody knows if it is now possible to cross the border beetween Djanet and Chirfa ?
( I've asked for that to few algerian agencies and they replied it was not possible ... )

Lybia=dead end route

If you want to travel to Niger or Algeria , don't try (now) to cross Lybia's southern borders : Even if you find a TO , you have absolutely no guarantee to cross these border and what you can do in this case ? Only go back to Tunisia .... That's a BIG WASTE OF TIME AND MONEY .

HI

Correct,

but money ,less than time, seems not to be a big prublem for some travels organizers, especially in the off limit's competitive offer.

I have just heard (from Yves) that someone tried and failed (failed Djanet to In Guez too).

I get the impression that the wilaya (county) of Ilizzi (incl. Djanet) is very restrictive with many (all?) pistes closed as a result of 2003 events - although TOs use the main internal pistes.
Wilaya of Tam is less restrictive so out via In Azaoua (into the Aïr of Niger and Iferouane - as mentioned in my News) may be possible - as opposed to the normal IGZ route.

Hi,

I think a very good reason to keep the border Djanet - Chrifa closed for tourist is the insecurity in that area, on the side of the Niger. Esxpecially because tourist frequently travel without guide in Niger and don't know how to avoid the risky passages. There had been several serious issues in the last years. Every body who leaves Djanet towards Chrifa will be noticed in Djanet and potential bandis are likely to get informed about.

Since the incident of the kidnapped Italians in Niger the region of NE Niger ( NW Tschad, SE Libya is more restricted.

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.
