A good Libyan guide, tried and tested!

We just finished a 5 day transit of Libya and despite all the concerns we had beforehand, we enjoyed it immensely!

After searching high and low, most companies quoted us around 1000 euros for arranging the visa fees and providing a guide. We managed to get through the 5 days spending just 718 euros for two people, EVERYTHING included!

We explained to Sami, the owner of Almuheet Tours(www.almuheettours.net, e-mail: info@almuheettours.net) in Benghazi that we are on a really tight budget. He charged us 635 US dollars for the agency, visa and guide fees. His guide(ask for Mr. Abdullah) was thoroughly briefed and we bushcamped three nights, paying only for one nights accomodation. We also cooked a lot of the meals ourselves, saving a lot. We also saw most of the main sights along the coastal routes.

They also have a guide(Mahmoud, Some Company) who can take you on desert trips, although we didn't go for this option.

The biggest advantage of using them was that, because we were on a tight budget and didn't sleep in hotels all the time, we came into contact with the local people a lot more!

Make sure you brief Sami, who speaks English very well, thoroughly on what you want, and also your detailed schedule as it is difficult to alter it during the trip.

The guides themselves speak very little English, but they are fantastic people who will genuinely go out of their way to help you.

Question Good Libyan guides

NAMSA

I'll certainly bear them in mind - I'm planning to go back to Libya in March-April 2008 and am on the lookout for decent guides who don't charge the earth for the privilege of sorting out the paperwork.
If there is anyone else out there who know of, or who can recommend, good guides and agencies (specifically for SW Libya) please let me know.

I used to use guides based in Ghat at Sardelles but am not sure if they still do the guiding bits. Guides in Sebha perhaps?

Cheers

Membership - help keep us going!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
