google earth is good for navigating in desert
Hei guys,
i checked the google earth. it gives very clear track for Ouadane to the big Guelb in Mauritania. it's the same the route which i took in the earlier of the year. And i even see the big curve on the road which is 8kms east of the Ouadane where my girl friend and me got the accident there.

so check the google earth, you will get some surprise. it's good for your planning.

I was going to post on the same subject.

GE is excellent, but I've only recently looked again at the desert. You can in some cases makes out individual tracks, for instance some near Nouadibhou etc.

Far better resolution than most of the UK in fact!

My impression is that GE resolution is very variable across the Sahara as it is over much of the UK. Where I looked (a large area of no tracks) GE wasn't much help at all in defining the terrain compared to Landsat stills or NASA WW equivalent (not free).

But elsewhere, it sure is a lot of fun to see where you've been!

M6 piste in Google Earth
Download the zip file (right click, save target to desktop): http://www.zroadster.net/tim/gs/m6.zip

The unzip it to the desktop and double click. Assuming you have Google Earth on your system, it should then display the M6 waypoints.

my girlfriend was driving the car. she drove around 60/kph along the way from Atar to Ouadane. And just 10KM to Ouadane, the piste has a significant bending curve. She lost the control. Car was rolling twice over the piste. I was sitting on the passenger seat. But for shitty lucky, we both are not injured. Our range rover classic lost the front window, roof stuck down.
If you past that area in the earlier Jan 2006, you probably saw our car.

Yesterday I have been wathching the border between the saharan Morocco and Mauritania (Atlantic route). You can even see the cars and houses on the checkpoints!

Parts that are degraded in Google Earth seem to be in the clear on this system. UK coverage is very sharp, you can see apparent old building lines in fields quite clearly. In Africa local names are superimposed more so than Google.

Hey all just found this site. Its a Nasa version of google of earth. Haven't tried it on my comp as I'm surrently running a Mac. But by all accounts I think it will run without a DSL connection (Be good if someone could confirm this).

Its a 2 gig download (google earth is 80mb).

If I'm right this would be ideal for any of you who are running laptops out on the road.

I featured WorldWind 'pass overs' in Desert Driving II - great fun and better res than Google (but it does not run for Macs).

With sahara maps as good as they are cant imagine ever using it to aid nav on the road - more a fun way of getting a feel for the terrain before you go.
