Two lads, planning to bike London to Cape Town, Oct 2002 - anyone in London who fancies a or two to help with first hand accounts etc would be gratefully received. Have read all the books, doing mechanics courses etc but access to / situation / potential situation in Sudan especially appreciated. Many thanks - contact Paddy on +44 (0)7771 968 846

Someone on this forum did mention going through the NE corner of DRCongo from CAR to Uganda as a way of avoiding Sudan. Needn't be certain death it seems, although elsewhere DRC seems to have gone 'tribal'.

Yo guys,
We're planning exactly the same trip, leaving at the same moment (from Belgium). Would be cool to get in touch. I'm once in while in London for work (working for Cable & Wireless ;-) and would like to accept the -invite ;-)

To P Devink and Gertd.
If you're after info as far as Libya-Algeria-Niger then (Mali/Burkina/Ivory coast/Ghana/Togo or Benin), then I'm happy to help, and will be around Tamanrasset approx start November.
Gertd, I am based 'en Brussel' at the moment?!
Sam.

I'm thinking about doing the same trip starting october or november from Munich. I'm still uncertain about the route, maybe Tunisia-Libya-Egypt-Sudan(?)-Ethopia-...-SA. Due to my riding skills, I'll do it by a light bike like a XT 350 and I'll take my time for the trip. Anybody who's interested in accompanying me, mail to:

Sudan should be no problem.
Am in Addis now and have met overlabnd trucks full of Brits who got visas in Cairo as well as independent travellers who had no hassles at all. You must get a registration document that must be stamped by officials in various towns. Otherwise no sweat.
Roads are reasonable I beleive. Must get convoy in Egypt and import a pain. Keep out of the south of Sudan.
Cheers

My friend and I completed a similar journey last year on two Lamas we borrowed from a Lama farm in Dorset. Unfortunately, Sami, the male died 90 miles into the Sahara which was upsetting although he did provide a welcome meal and some tough but not inedible biltong for the rest of the journey. Would be happy to meet up and share experiences, photos and my brothel map which I designed on route - there are 271 brothels between Algeciras and Cape Town...astonishing I know! Don't know all of them but can give insight into a few dozen.
Drop us an email: at link above
email address removed by Grant - see http://www.horizonsunlimited.com/ubb/faq.shtml#notify for why.

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.
You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
