Insurgency continues around Kidal
The Taureg - Islamic insurgency rolls on in N Mali......
http://www.int.iol.co.za/index.php?s...6169642087B254
Bamako - Algerian Islamic insurgents launched a revenge attack against a group of former Tuareg rebels in the deserts of northern Mali on Monday, killing nine of them, a Malian official said on Tuesday.
The attack came a month after Tuareg fighters killed a leader of the Salafist Group for Preaching and Combat (GSPC), an Algerian rebel movement that has pledged allegiance to al-Qaeda.
GSPC fighters ambushed members of the Tuareg's Democratic Alliance for Change near the village of Arouan, about 150km from the desert city Kidal where Tuareg rebels launched an uprising in May to demand greater autonomy.
"There was violent fighting. The toll was nine dead, several injured and two prisoners from the ranks of the Alliance," the official said. He could not provide casualty figures for the GSPC.

Actually I would not call this a revived Tuareg insurgency - this is the not unexpected revenge attack by the GSPC for the raid a few weeks ago when Mali Tuareg killed some GSPC (including the leader) in the same area.
In fact the insurgency seems to be settled (ie, 'business as usual'...) after a deal brokered by Algie (though briefly derailed by Libya) and it seems taking out some north Mali based GSPC helps that deal and so its stirred things up a bit. As elsewhere in the world, the end of the hot season (and Ramadan) signals the raiding season.

Let's hope Chris is right. I also hope the US don't get involved in these reprisals - with their base at Tam you can imagine they'll want to in the future.....

>>> I also hope the US don't get involved in these reprisals
they will leave them to it I imagine but anything that hurts the GSPC (lately in reversal but also officially linked with Al Q) is alright by them - and good for us des travellers too.

Membership - help keep us going!
Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.
You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
