No, its not possible to drive from Layoun to Bir Mogrein. You can go as far as where the road bends to Smara. Gueltat Zemmour is a military base where no civilians are allowed. In reverse it is possible to drive from Bir Mogrein to Layoun. But you might have to wait for two days at the border at the defense wall in Gueltat Zemmour until the military recieve permission from Rabat to let you in. The militarians at the border are very friendly and bring you each morning fresh bread and taghine in the evening. If you have cigarettes to share everyone is a winner. In Bir Moghrein you can do youre formalities at the Gendarme. There's a little campsite just outside the town. The road from Zouerate tot Bir Moghrein is relativly easy going. Zouarate - Choum is sandy (the same Azzefal dunes as on the Nouakchott - Nouadhibou road)
