Lake Nasser Ferry/ Nile Navigation Co.
I have been unsuccessful in my attempts to contact the ferry company. i just keep getting some woman with no english, and seeing as I don't have any Arabic, the conversation dies quite quickly. What day does the Barge, that can take vehicles, sail??
Thanks

I'm impressed by how far ahead you're planning Dwayne.
Having browsed plenty of travel diaries, I can deduce that Murphy's law dictates that whatever day is written on the timetable, it will have sailed the day before you arrive.
A question for someone as organised as you; now that the RAC won't cover Egypt, how are you sorting the CDP for that leg of your journey?
Cheers

Dwayne,
I am planning a trip leaving in early Jan 2004 that will take me thru Egypt to Sudan in a vehicle - While it sounds like your preparations are further developed than mine, I have at least started looking at the best way of crossing the border between Egypt/Sudan.
It looks like the car ferry at Aswan may be the best option, though I have heard that it may be possible to get a cheaper car ferry further down from Abu Simbel to Wadi Halfa - whatever the route though it will be expensive (from Aswan the Lonely Planet quotes prices of US$2300 for 5/6 cars!!!!!!!!) - the only way to reasonably afford it is to arrange a convoy - If you are travelling at a similar time, would you be interested in at least trying to arrange to do the crossing in convoy?
I have also written to the Egyptian tourist office in Cairo to get more info - I have heard rumours (and at the mo' they are just that!) that the Red Sea road to Port Sudan may be opening soon - I wouldn't get my hopes up though!!

Sorry for posting twice...
The ferry leaves on Mondays, dep. time is 14:00 but you can expect some hours delay.
Ticket price for passenger (lowest fare) is 120 EP. As for the car, there is cargo barge attached to one side of the ferry. You can put your car on for ca. 300 USD (info nov.2002).

The only way to cross is by water. It is possible to drive further south, but border crossing is not possible. I spent about 4 days recently checking and double checking, with people that have travelled recently. Check webistes such as www.a2b.uk.net and http://enableafrica.net for info and experiences. We're leaving in 2 weeks so will be far away when you reach sudan.
Luke,
RAC will give you a CDP to cover Egypt. Its just that the amount is 500%. I got a bank gaurentee to the amount and CDP is being issued as I type.
Devile
Thanks for info

Dwayne,
it seems that the road south is indeed closed - I got a fax from the Egyptian Tourists authority in Cairo - they claim that to even cross into Sudan by river you need to get a permit of some sort from the Intelligence Authorities. This though can easily be done through one of the following travel companies:
Misr Travel (London Office: 020 7255 1087)
Pan Arab Tours
Minerva Tours
I am only repeating what they told me and don't know how accurate this is. In truth I have already spoken to Misr Travel in London and the guy I spoke to didn't seem to know much!
There is a tourist office in Aswan by the way. Don't know how useful this is but the tel no. is:
00 20 97 312 811
Good luck with your trip
