Mali - Algeria
Hi,
somebody knows is it possible to get Algerian visa in Bamako? Is it less hassle as to get it in Europe?
If entering Algeria from South - is it easier with officials? Or they still require escort/guide?
Has anyone done it recently?
I am planning to do it in late January 2006, after coming down Atlantic route.
Thanks for help,
Kaspars

Because of the visa and border hassles, you may find it easier to do you trip in the other - clockwise - direction.
(There are Mali and Niger consulates in Tam.)

well i am now considering go anticlockwise again, algerian consulate in denmark keep saying no problems with the visa but nothing happens, i am at 45 days of departure and have applied for the visa two months ago, had paid 100 euro of depositum for a guide and got a letter of invitation from a authorized agent, but apparently is not enough...
so if not visa is given to me then we'll hit the atlantic route and make a new plan in Bamako or Agadez.

You can get a transit visa for Algeria in Gao - there is an Algerian consulate in town. If you stay at Sahara Passion the guy who runs it will help you. A transit visa is only good for ten days though. If that fails you can always head on to Niger and pick up a tourist one there.

thanks all for useful info.
At the moment seems we will go to Timboctou to see the music festival in mid-Jan, and then we will see in Gao, is it possible to get this transit visa, and what the locals will suggest about Borj Moktar route. If we will have no chance there, we will return through Mauritania again, hitting some other route then.
If anybody has some additional info about Borj Moktar, it will be greatly appreciated.
On other hand, may be somebody wants to join us - two couples squeesed in '91 Toyota 4 runner?
Thanks,
