Mali visas
Hi,
Just to let folks know ....
A friend of mine posted her passport off to Brussels for her Mali visa. After it hadn't arrived 3 weeks later she phoned up .... apparently a few passports have gone missing recently and so the Ambassador has instructed staff that colection only is possible !!!
We have a friend who can get it for us, but something to bear in mind for the future ...
Is there an easier option ? We are going out to Mali at Christmas and I was thinking of trying to get all the visas sorted before going - don't want to be stuck on a border without a visa as I have done before ....

From UK you can DIY on Eurostar or give it to a visa agency to do by courier for 50-100 quid each.
I would think posting a passport o an embassy is dodgy - we all know how bad the post has got in the UK...

I use an agency for the Mali visa, at least when going there direct from the UK. No problems.
Otherwise I have obtained a Mali visa in Rabat (in March 2001 - took 10 minutes, forgot the price) and Niamey (in January 2003 - I think same day or next day, 20000CFA). I've given the dates as embassies can of course close or move.
If arriving by air have some proof of vaccinations with you. This has been checked every time I've arrived by air from Europe at Bamako, but wasn't checked when I've arrived in Mali from elsewhere in Africa or overland.
Cheers,
Ian.

As long as I don't get deluged, I am happy to pop passports in/out of embassies in Brussels (I live there).

If you go overland (Marocco, Mauretania)you get your Mali Visa at the embassy in Nouakchott/Mauretania within 3 hours. Leave the passport at 9.am at the embassy, take it at noon.
You get a 5 days visa at the border, you have to extend it at the immigration service in Bamako (this information I got in February 2004 from the embassy staff).

When I was in Nouakchott last Feb, I got the Mali visa in 20 minutes for a whopping 9 euros. It was an ordinary visa so valid for - I believe - 30 days.

Am currently in Bamako, having picked up my Mali visa in Nouakchott - took 30 mins while we waited and cost 5000UG or less than 10 quid.
Only useful if you're going overland though...

hi
we have just arrived from mali.
we were planning to do the visa in Nouakchott but we pass there in a Saturday.
we decided to do the visa at the Mali border.
after being scared by a Mali military when passing the border we went to kayes and there we made a fast a cheap (around 25 euros) visa
