No Health Insurance For Mauritania? Foreign office advice

I am currently trying to find a Travel/Health insurance policy to cover me whilst riding a motorcycle through Mauritania. The problem seems to be that when you read the small print, any country that has been designated by the foreign office as a zone where they 'advise against all travel', you will not be covered by the policy!
I have read many posts of riders passing through Mauritania, i assume that they had travel/health insurance. Does anyone know of any policies that will cover high risk areas such as these? I dont really want to have zero health insurance and suffer the potential consequences.
Any advice or recommendations would be greatly appreciated.

You can look for organizations - who will bring you home - when you are in trouble.

For us in switzerland there is the "Rega"

Quote:
Rega comes to the aid of people in distress, both in Switzerland and abroad. As a non-profit foundation, it is totally dependent on the financial support of its patrons. Your contribution will help us to provide the best possible service at all times - perhaps even one day for you.
https://www.rega.ch/en/support-rega/...ga-patron.aspx

And the organizations who issue the carnet in Switzerland (TCS) or Germany (ADAC) - have special insurances called "protection worldwide postage"
for cover healing costs and legal expenses.

Both for a fair amount of money - and world wide coverage.

So have a look, what your homeland offer in this style

But our health insurance too covers the world - so both above is a kind of backup.

Have you tried Europ Assistance?

I can't see your country of origin so can't tell if it's applicable. Drop them an email and inform us.

In 2007 they gave me a quote for a motorcycle trip to Mauritania.

There's a long sticky thread on travel insurance for EU / UK residents over in 'staying healthy on the road'.

But yes if the FO decides you shouldn't be there then your insurance isn't valid.

"But yes if the FO decides you shouldn't be there then your insurance isn't valid."

Not quite. Some of us investigated and got the concession that it was only if you were affected by what the FCO warning was about.

So if you trip over and break your leg in Nouakchott, you are covered. But if you get shot by the baddies that the FCO warned you about, then you wouldn't be.

There has to be this concession, else no travel insurance would ever cover you in India for example which is always on the fco warning list because of Kashmir etc. Same with Thailand recently etc. But you need to discuss this with them beforehand, don't call from Mori needing a triple heart by-pass!

This is from EUROPESURE who I had a policy with in January ... I was going to use them again in Jan 2013, but it looks like they do NOT cover you in Mauritania!!

Thank you for your mail. You can access the FCO latest advice via our website Expat Travel Insurance, Single Trip, Annual Multi Trip, Winter Sports, Golf, Business, Senior Citizen Travel Insurance but at present the advice is -

Fco travel-summary

Our policy excludes (as do most travel policies) – “You travelling to a country where the Foreign and Commonwealth Office have advised against all but essential travel.”

Depending on which part of the country and the need for your journey (essential ?) it may be possible to cover you. Please let me have some details and we can enquire with Lloyd’s. Our Underwriters also offer another policy for war zones etc so we may be able to assist you if our standard product does not fit

Kind regards

Here's another update from my insurers which may be of interest....

Dear Mr Bruton,
Thank you for your reply. Standard travel policies are packaged products for normal holiday/business trips to safe countries. For this reason, they cannot be split into safe or unsafe aspects so if you are traveling to a country deemed unsafe by the FCO there would be no cover.
If you can let me have details of your trip etc, we can refer it to Underwriters however
Kind regards
