John, here is teh firts bit, I am busy doing the rest, will paste over here. It is a bit difficult to read, but also quite funny, you can read it next time you camp under an acacia tree somewhere near Mopti in the heat and get a laugh.

Cheers,

Expedition report over Chad and the Sudan

Conditions 1993 Chad: In order into north Chad, into PRAY (Borkou, Ennedi, Tibesti) to drive, different permission of Ministries are needed. Those are z. B. the "authorization speciale de filmer ou de photograph" (= films), "authorization de circuler et de prises de vues" and "authorization de more circuler".
Since in the north different runways became to leave new runways because of mining and were put on, is urgently to recommend only with ortskundigem leader to drive. North Chad can be mastered exclusively by well equipped rough-terrain vehicles.
There are no banks in the north, it must therefore sufficiently franc CFA or franz. Franc to be carried. Many 50CFA, 100CFA-Stuecke and 500CFA and 1000CFA-Scheine carry, it forward prevail extreme lack of change. Since January 1994 the course 1FF=100 FCFA applies. Carry as an assistance for the population drop against binding skin inflammation, means against failure illnesses and antibiotics. Also French magazines and articles of clothing are very in demand. Carry Sardinendosen forward as inexpensive food which can be given away. Extremely poor population! For leaders or native drivers cheap mini KW of receivers is a high-welcome gift.
Carry several fuel filters and air cleaner cartridges for the own vehicle.
More cheaply than at the gas station fuel from barrels can be refuelled at the arterial roads of N`Djamena. In Faya Largeau can be acquired on the "Libyan market" fuel from 200l-Faessern. Further in the north can be usually refuelled in Bardai, occasionally also in Yebi Bou or Ounianga Kebir from barrels. The most important basic food is available in the oases of the north from imported goods made of Libya.
1) N`Djamena direction Chad lake to the "Hadjer el Hamis" (rock of the giant): N`Djamena in northern direction leave, tar route, Sahellandschaft.
After 10km checkpoint, after 33km branch to the left toward Douguia, 40km.
Douguia, village at the Chari with good, European led hotel with Swimmingpool.
From there travels with leader to the Chad lake after Adide, N12°54'41 ", E014°33'56 "and to the elefantenfoermigen rock" Hadjer el Hamis "N 12°51`19", E014°58`26 "possible.
2) N`Djamena Faya Largeau N`Djamena in northern direction on tar route leave.
After 10km checkpoint, after 33km branch left toward Douguia. 46km straightforward drive on toward Massaguet on broad, more driven out runway put on on dam.
Massaguet: N 12°28`57 ", E 15°25'44 ", control posts of the police.
Drive on 68km on broad runway toward Massakory, which remains lying however left off the runway. Four kilometers thereafter, more unmarkierter however clearly recognizable branch to the right, on sandige runway toward Moussoro. the broader runway leading straightforward goes to Mao. After further 64km Karawanserei with market: Chèddra, N13°26`43 ", E16°02`46 ".
To further 70km travel by Sahel landscape with many dust holes and bushes Moussoro N13°39'00 comes ", E16°29'48 ". The runway after Moussoro and also far to the north up to the end of the Bahr el Ghazal are not located and not marked, but form after each inundation again again in arbitrary place of the Oueds.
Moussoro: Message at the police mandatorily, in emergencies of all kinds for French soldiers stationed there ask. In Moussoro one can itself, if one approx.. three hours time, bread let bake.
Drive on on sandiger unmarkierter runway 194km to the desert village Salal N14°50'54 ", E17°13'12 ".
One leaves the always noticeable Bahr el Ghazal and moves 170km in pure desert landscape after Kouba Oulanga N15°44'54 ", E18°17'57 ". There message is mandatory with the "Sécrétariat de la Soupréfécture". The leader after Faya Largeau by the dune area "suppl. you, offered there, Djourab" is not mandatory. Demanded fee of the leaders: 25.000CFA to 50. 000CFA.
the western runway processes over Koro Toro to the north, registered on the maps, are mined, if one follows the well visible markings however starting from the Souspréfécture of Kouba Oulanga strictly, then lead the runway in easily eastern elbow to the north toward Tchié. This is a new runway process, which became to provide a tag with the inscription "Faya xx km" with old markings and all 10km carries. Very sandige crossing of the dune area, behind it broad, stony runway toward Faya. After 288km travel and 30km before Faya with N17°50`48 ", E19°15`28 ", marked branch to the right toward Fada. After further 6km, with N17°53'45 ", E19°14'44 "branch toward Fada and Ounianga Kebir, marked again. 17km before Faya control of the gendarmerie dÀnoul, N17°53 ', E18°58 '. Faya Largeau, N17°55`25 ", E19°06'03 ". Message at the prefecture and police necessarily. Food supply scarcely sufficiently, fuel usually available, international telephoning possible, expensive tschadisches and cheap Libyan Cola available. 5km northwest the center idyllischer mark with artesischem well. Water very eisenhaltig, thus for showering OK ONE, not however as drinking water suitably. At the latest starting from Faya a suitable leader should be taken, that knows, French speaks and also routistic information give can the mined regions. Before the departure from Faya recent message is necessary at the authorities.
3) distance Faya Largeau - Zouar - Bardai: The old runway of Faya toward Zouar is mined on the first distance section. <End of

Membership - help keep us going!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
