Routes to Sudan

Instead of going via Egypt, how feasible is it to go down the Atlantic route and across via Mali / Niger / Chad into Sudan?

I'm taking wife, 3 kids and dragging a Sankey Trailer behind my 110 CSW.

Are the pistes / roads very difficult? Is there more border and visa hassle? Are there any security issues I should be worried about.

We're due to leave at the end of July so any advice or info would be great.

Thanks again,

Pete.

Just got back to UK having used that route to then continuing down to SA. Its certainly possible. We were one of about 10 landrovers / landcruisers that came through on that route plus 5 overland trucks with passengers also came through. Chad isn't that friendly - rocks being thrown at the car, we got robbed three times but great countryside. Easier to come via Nigeria, crossing Cameroon, Lake Chad is hard going but possible, we took three days to come through. Got robbed in Massakory. Sudan is great but a long sand drive. A dutch couple in a 200TDI 90 with a sankey trailer came through without major problems. They managed to meet up with some other travellers in 2 110s which helped pull them out when they got stuck with the trailer. Its a long sand slog across western sudan but the people are great. Visas are easy to come by. Niger, Chad, Sudan all got issued on the day, Niger and Sudan within an hour.

Tobias,
did you meet many motorcyclists along that route? If so how were they finding the going? Visas, were they issued at the borders? Maximum distance between fuel?

Thanks in advance for any information
Jeff

Tobias,

What nationality are you? V. interested to hear that the visa situation was straightforward. As a British national we always seem to have loads of trouble and I gathered Sudan would be the worst on this route. Where did you get the visas?
Got any pictures/travelogue? Would be v. interested to read more about this route.

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.
