Selling Car in Mauretania
Is it possible to sell a vehicle in Mauretania? If so, which make/model is most desirable (I was thinking of picking up a cheap Renault 4 in Spain to drive down), and where is the best place to sell? I cycled down this route in 1996, but this time want to get down there a bit quicker. Also, can anyone tell me if it's possible to take a car into the Banc d'Arguin National Park, and related costs.
Cheers.

You can easily sell your car in Mauritania.
However:
1) Make sure to get a "quitos" stamped into your passport
2) Don't think you'll be leaving the country with any money..

Yes you can sell a car in Mauritania, best are merc diesels from the W123 series (1976-1984 200D 240D 300D) the most popular being the 200d with the four speed manual gearbox. The R4 is very popular too.
You can sell in either Nouadhibou or Nouakchott, look out for a guy called Moulay, fat, bald on top has a goatee and is 100% reliable. Doesnt give the best prices but is hassle free.
Prices for the park have gone up this year, UM1600 per person per day, two day minimum fee. 1€ is UM300-325 last time I was there.
There is some paperwork involved in selling the car, they may or may not stamp the quitis into the passport, but go into the customs building with the buyer and get the paper with him. Dont be fobbed off by some bullshit like "stay here its cheaper for me if I go alone" etc etc.
There are taxes to be paid to the police and customs on entering, UM2000 in all.

Hi ! ,
Just remember that for all means , GO with your Buyer to the Douanne Office , and HAVE YOUR VEHICLE DETAILS REMOVED FROM YOUR PASSPORT . That - in 1998 - costed us 2000 FF (about 300 Eur) .It deppends on your bargainining abilities to decide who pays' for that .
OBviously , the Buyer will tell ya "Its no longer needed " , "Cheaper if I go alone" , "you can fix it at the boder" .
No way !.The only way you can exit the country is by having your vehicle details "removed" from your passport IN THE DOUANNE OFFICE , by the DOUANNE OFFICER , in presence of both YOU , THE BUYER , and THE MONEY .
Having said that , you won't find any difficulty in finding - what appear to be buyers for your vehicle - but is just and endless chain of comission seekers. Also Dont let anyone test-drive your car without showing the cash before . Some of them just want a free ride/drive.
Enjoy ./

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.
