We travelled up from Mali in our own vehicle in December - no problems at all. Lots of police and customs will stop you on entry to towns in Mauri and W. sahara but just give them a fiche (photocopy back page of passport) and they are fine. Very polite and friendly on the whole. Occasional request for a cadeau is easily deflected with a smile and a shrug. Beware of speed cams in w. Sahara and Morocco - be very careful of 60 signs! Also be very careful of animals on the road in Mauri and don't drive after dark - we did a few times and it isn't worth the frayed nerves!!!
