Trip from Djanet - Chirfa - Bilma - Nguigmi

I've search but only to find 3-4 years old threads about this topic. Does anyone know if it at all is possible to drive down this way, track condition? What about security?

We will be on two motos and one Toyota pickup.

Hi,
Algeria will not let you exit at Djanet.
The area is very unsafe because rebell activity in NIger and Tchad.
An Italian group was kidnapped 2 years ago at Agadem and all released several hours later except 2 of them which were released only several weeks later. You may find more info on sahara.it bbs.

Thanks for your answer. I plan to go on this trip but not until next year so hopefully the situation will be a little better by then.

If, fingers crossed, that will be the case, has anyone driven the pist from Djanet to Chirfa and maybe has some gps-coordinates to share or just some info if it is rideable at all? I suppose the border has been open before sometime, or?

Maybe it's better to try to drive through Libya down to Niger via Al Katrun - Tumu - Seguedine?

Like Yves said, Algeria will not let you exit at Djanet and I think that rule is here to stay. It is possible the Tenere/Aïr may calm down by next year; the problem now will be mines (in the Aïr at least).

Djanet to Chirfa is easy - balise posts nearly all the way. See Route A15 in the Sahara book.

Maybe it's better to try to drive through Libya down to Niger...

You've missed your chance on that one too - they closed it to tourists a couple of years back.

Best thing is to try: In Guezzam - Arlit, Iferounane, Adrar Bous, Chirfa and down to Nguigmi - asuming the area becomes safe again. It's a great part of the Sahara for sure.

Membership - help keep us going!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
