Tunisia to the Gambia
What are peoples thoughts on best route for 2 motorcyclists to take
we are looking for some fun not just solid tarmac riding (we have adventures bikes and are capable off road enthusiasts)
Reading foreign office travel advice is pretty damming of the whole region. So am open to ideas....?

Tunisia to Gambia in former times might have taken you down the Tanezrouft in S.Algeria, on through Mali and west to the coast. It would have been a big adventure without a support vehicle. Alternatively, through S.Algeria and into Niger - then west.
It turns out S Algeria is closed at the moment and prior to it being closed, the border with Niger and Mali were in effect closed to tourists.
Since you can't go Algeria, Morocco, W.Sahara, Mauri, Senegal, Gambia (because the Morocco-Alg border is closed), there isn't really a way of getting between Tunisia and the Gambia at the moment.
Best bet is Morocco, W.Sahara etc. You could still do some interesting things in Morocco, W.Sahara and Mauri.

I remember looking at the Tanezrouft route 20yrs ago trying to work out whether it was possible for an unsupported bike to do it but concluded that it was just about impossible. Not only the 800+ mile range needed (and that if the fuel stations in the south actually had fuel) but the remoteness as well pushed it well beyond what I was happy to risk on my own. Algerian politics imploded shortly afterwards and that was that.
As has been mentioned the only overland route to The Gambia atm is the Atlantic route through Morocco, WS, Mauri and Senegal. You'll not be able to do that from Tunisia without returning to Europe first.

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.
You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive.
