Canada/USA Crossing paper work.

Hello Hub'rs.

Can you please help with info on crossing from Canada (Montreal) into the States please. Paper work, bike requirements etc. We have our Visa's sorted - just checking that we don't get caught out by over looking something.

Best wishes

Paul

Ps - any nods on bike insurance on arrival in Canada - appreciated.

You will probably need an EPA exemption certificate if you model bike was never sold in the US, this can take up to 6 weeks.

The email to use is Imports@epamail.epa.gov , there is a lot more info in the forums if you have a search.

In reality it would appear the form is only used at air or sea ports, when we crossed from Canada in September last year no one was interested in it.

For insurance, again a lot of info here if you search. But I'd suggest just going with Motorcycle Express (Gail Goodman) (link is all over HU).

All you need is your passport, the story of what you're up too, some fingers to be screened, and a face to be photographed. Been over the border twice this week with no hassles.
Im on 'motorcyle express' too

If you are riding in to the USA on your very own motorcycle as a temporary tourist and intend to take it out of the country again there is no need to worry about any kind of paperwork for the bike. It doesn't matter if it is an exotic which was never sold in the US and it doesn't matter if it is not EPA certified. It is your transportation and you may travel anywhere, even into California
Just so long as it is not an obvious nuisance belching smoke and oil they will not care in the least . All they are interested in is YOU and your possible terrorist links . So bring your passport and your fingers , get ready to have your mugshot and fingerprints taken, answer some questions about your travel plans, return ticket to your home country ,answer all the questions on the I 94 application (NO is the right answer for all the dumb questions!) , pay $6 , get your I-94 card and be off. Don't volunteer any unasked for info and don't try to be funny- they have no sense of humor.

I'd still say do the EPA paper work before you go, you *may* get a border crossing with a "jobsworth" who wants it.

There have been cases reported here last year of people being stuck at airport/ports.

Best to be safe rather than sorry (process actually takes about 3 weeks so you have time).

For a few hours spent on the computer scanning stuff and sending it, it is better than a possible wait of days/weeks trying to cross the line.

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.
