Fairbanks to Prudoe Bay

I heard the last part of the road is closed to private traffic. Is that the case? I want to head up there next July. What is the time from Fairbanks to the Ocean? Can you get all the way to the ocean? Thanks for your replies.

Thumbs up

I went up there 5 weeks ago, and all open. I asked here as I thought it might have been closed due to all the repairs, but no problem, and one of the best rides I've ever had! Made it in a day from Fairbanks to Prudhoe Bay.

Make sure you're in dry conditions for a pleasant road, and don't plan on spending any time in Prudhoe, there's nothing to do except an hour's oilfield tour (and no bar!).

And remember you have 240 miles with no services from Coldfoot to Prudhoe. If the road's dry you can make some good speed/time - I was doing 60-80mph a lot of the time. Wet weather will make it a lot trickier. If you want to split it, as I did on the way down after my oilfiled tour in the morning, Wiseman's a really beautiful little spot to stop near Coldfoot. I stayed in Boreal Lodge cabins.

I've put some photos and route here:

You can get as far as deadhorse, then you need to pay to take a bus to stick your toe in the water.

Membership - help keep us going!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
