Having a foreign registered bike in USA and Canada longer than 12 months.
I'm an Australian, riding an Australian registered motorcycle, currently riding up through Central America.
My plan is arrive in the USA from Mexico in April this year and slowley head up to Canada arriving in late July this year (2019). Ideally I would then store the bike at a friend's place in Canada until May 2020 when I would start to travel again through Canada and Alaska. Eventually I would export the bike from Canada around September 2020.
I'm aware that this plan will break various Temporary Import rules because of the total time the bike is in Mexico/USA/Canada (approx 18 months in all).
My question is will it matter, and will anyone in USA or Canadian officialdom care? I have done this twice in Europe with no issues but wonder if the North American situation is similar.
If it is a problem I will just ship the bike back to Europe between the two parts of the trip using Air Canada motorcycle freight program but I would prefer to avoid this expense if it is not necessary.
Many thanks in advance for people's thoughts and especially any practical experience of doing something similar.
