Insurance for a foreign car in the US and Canada
Hi,
I will come from Mexico to US in July with my car with EU plates but I ran into a problem with the insured vehicle. I have offer from one insurance for 6 month for 1749 $ just for third part and just for US. Is it this normal price or they want to rob me ? I have call to the border and they tell me I cant buy insurance on the border and I must have it before I cross the border.
The problem is to make contact with moust of insurance because they have just phone for contact not email. It is expensive for me to call from EU to US.Do you have any better experiences and some contacts to solve my problem.
Best regards,
Boris

I have in the past insured a UK registered motorcycle with Progressive but I am not sure whether they still offer cover. There was a drop down option for non-US licence holders and the system asked if I was sure of the vin number but accepted it when I confirmed, all this was done on-line.

Get Skype. 800 numbers exist for most insurance companies and toll free numbers are free on Skype. I recently went to insure my motorcycle, registered in Costa Rica through progressive.
I used my sisters address in the USA. From what I understand you need a USA address, but anyway, the price, 3rd party only, was $50.00 down, $50.00 a month, $350.00 a year. Since I’m only planning to stay 3 weeks, $100.00, about the same as a week in Mexico with crappy coverage.
Good luck to you.

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.
You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
