Proudhoe bay to Ushuaia

I'm with this great site since 2000. Now it is time for me to plan THE BIG ONE. From Proudhoe bay down to Ushuaia, starting June/July 2009
I intend to ship my bike to Alaska and take it solo south. (my wife will join for 3 weeks in Peru)
I need some info on few subjects.
- Is it cleaver to bring my bike all the way from Israel (BMW Adv.) ? or shuld I buy similar one in the states(can be another make)?
- Two freinds of mine are intending to ride Canada border to Mexico with me (5 weeks) and they need two bikes, Shuld they buy them (used)? (then sell them back in US, minus %) rent them?
-How do I ship a bike back from Ushuaia to Isarel. is it better going north in Argentina to do so?

Yes, I know there is a lot of info here on such trips. I'm sorry for the beaten thread. I've got the route plan ready. Now I need some pointed infos. I'll be more happy for any help.

Thanks

Yoni

Prudhoe bay to TDF

Well I have been to Prudhoe bay and to TDF so have some ideas for you. Where are you planning on shipping your bike into? I can tell you if you want to buy one in Alaska it will be expensive. With the length of the trip you are planning it makes sense to just buy one because shipping is sooooooo expensive. I am shipping mine down to Santiago Chile how and the best price I have is $1700 one way from Miami Fl. It makes more sense to take your bike as then you will have it set up the way you like. If you are planning on shipping back by sea Ushuaia will work but air will be hard. The problem is you need a big plane to get a crated BMW gs 1200 adventure in. If you go back to BA you will be able to get it shipped out of there easier. Well good luck.

Good choice

Hey Yuni,
good choice, congratulations.
I did this trip in 2004/05 and it changed my life.
Now here are some points from my side:
1. Drive a bike that is registered to you personally, with matching papers and dates and addresses, that will make your life much easier.
2. Do not use a US licence plate, you will pay all the Gringo charges at the borders. (My American folks will forgive me, but most people in the Latin Americas do not favour the Gringos so much...)
3. Take enough fotocopies of your documents and never show the originals, only in official checks with many people. For that please read the Security and Travel page (you know for sure).
4. Shipping your bike to Alaska and from Argentina to Israel will not be any problem. There are many possibilities and great communities to help you. You will like it.
5. Enjoy and do not worry tooo much.

Have fun,
Ras

My shipping to Buenos Aires and back from Vancouver roughly cost $3,000 in total though you'l need another $550 to cross the Darien.

Good luck with that, you'll love it.

To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.
