Hello I live in Kentucky and rode to Jelico last weekend from the west, Big South Fork Nat'l. Recreation Area. I didn't have the T,A,T, maps but we found our way with De Lorme atlas.
Pretty nice area, we rann up several blind alleys. There are very few signs and we went up one named road that seemed to have been bought up and closed off. A bit confusing.
I rode a 650 KLR and it's O.K. for the job, but I had to stand on the pegs and ride fairly hard some of the time. We went through some creeks that were over the pegs. I'm not sure I'd want a bigger bike for this.
One other thing Tennessee in June can be 100 degrees F and in the woods with no air moving very oppressive. Hydrate well and take plenty of breaks. You can always bail for blacktop find a store and enjoy a R.C. and a Moonpie.
Have fun.

RC??....Moon pie????
Thanks Kbikey,
I have a camel back and like taking breaks.
What is an RC and a Moonpie. Does it involve taking your trousers off?

Most folks drink a Yoohoo with their Moon Pie.
If they're out of RC, try Cheerwine, or maybe a Sundrop.

mooning
No no no , keep your pants on unless you're going skinny dipping. R.C. is a cola Royal Crown Cola to be precise. The Moonpie is a triple layer cookie and marshmallo treat covered with chocalate[ or vannilla or bananna icing] yum!
If you're riding through Ky. on your way to the trail, let me know I'd be glad to show off my state, put you up, find you some moonshine or whatever.

Nosey questions
Sounds like the tables are turned. Sorry for the confusion - I should be used to the inverted dates by now, considering my husband is an Aussie...
You will certainly catch up with us on trail since we are taking it pretty slow. We'll be watching for you.
What are you riding? Will you be camping or hoteling? Are you currently in the U.S.?
We are in Tellico Plains at the Cherohala Motorcycle Resort for the weekend and plan on heading to Jellico on Sunday. We'll let you know how the trail goes as we progress.
BTW - as a southern native, I highly recommend taking up any offers to experience true southern charm - complete with R.C. cola, Cherrywine, Moonpies and of course, moonshine...
Good Luck and Happy Trails!!!

Hi Guys,
This is turning into a confectionary based thread! I'm riding an XT600 which is shipping out tomorrow(13 MAY 2007) and I am picking it up in Charleston SC 4 JUNE 2007, riding to Jellico and starting the trail 5 JUNE 2007. Well that's the plan. I will be flying in on 2 JUNE 2007.
I plan to stay in motels mainly but have an interesting set up involving a motorcycle, tarpaulin and a bivvy bag if all goes pear shaped.Might need some moonshine to get it to work!
There is another english guy called Paul Howey riding the trail about 1 week in front of me, you are bound to meet him at some point. He is riding an XR honda.
I'm also an Oz citizen having lived in Perth,Melbourne and Newcastle for 13 years.
All the best,
See you on the trail
Jon

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.
You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
