Winnebago
Hi,I am asking this question for a work friend of mine who is retiring next year.He has the chance to buy a big petrol guzzler Winnebago that is parked up in Arizona at the moment. He thought it would be a nice retirement present for himself and the chance to see more of the USA.He has recently lost his wife to cancer, his kids have grown up so he is thinking what the hell ! I know in his situation I would be doing the same thing but on 2 wheels, but hey, everyone to their own !
All he wants to know is would it be possible for him to have it registered in his name and I take it he would have to have an address out there to do so.What else would he need apart from insurance of course.Does he need a special driving licence apart from an international driving permit ?Apparently in UK it would need a LGV licence due to its weight. Is this the same for USA ?If so he does hold a UK LGV licence would this suffice ?
Would it be a fairley simple procedure or a pain ?
Many thanks in advance !
Simon

Amazingly, in the US no special licence is needed to drive a 35-40' motorhome! Any weight, air or hydraulic brakes. Just a regular drivers' licence.

This link has some information on motorhome registration.
RVs and Motor Home DMV Registration - DMV.ORG
I have a friend who is retired and lives in a motorhome and he found out that South Dakota is the best place to buy and register a Motorhome in.
You can get a Post Office drop with a street address and the registration fees and insurance is less than other places.

I live in the southwest corner of Arizona. Have him pm me if he wants/needs to register the RV in Arizona.
BTW, my relatives on my father's side live in Faversham and Whitstable; in fact my father was there visiting them last week (my parents live in L.A.)
By chance, do you know a guy named Wayne Drinkwater? He lived in your area, too, and was into American cars--I think he worked in the Ford dealer in Canterbury in the body shop.

Membership - help keep us going!
Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.
You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
