I crossed few weeks ago in a group of 13 people with them. From the beginning, some months before the entrance there was paperwork problems with them, that finally were fixed with time and patience. While the crossing, the quantity of checkpoints is disgusting and bored, I have to say that our guide did his best. I don't know if all the paperwork was "real" or just for justify the excessive price. It's sad can't explore the region because it must be beautiful: high mountains, big desert, one of most importants cities of the ancient silk road. But at the moment, without speak Chinese or know someone that help you with the paperwork, I don't see the way to do it at your own. Good luck.
