From Vladivostok (Russia) to Japan
Is anybody here from japan? me with 2-3 friends now planning trip to Japan next may of 2010. actually it will be good to be at 2010 bmw motorrad meeting there.
and of course - a lots a questions!!!

Yes, there are some Horizons members in Japan!

Also, the BMW Motorrad Bikermeting in 2009 was in August. I don't know the date for 2010, but I think it is the same time every year.

Do you know you will need a Carnet for Japan?

I hope you will be able to visit next year! Japan and (Far East) Russia are so close, but we have few biker visitors from Russia because of the Carnet rule.

Hi Chris. thanks for your anwser. yes, i know about a carnet. and we plan to make this certificates.
now is good way to go to japan is poosible. this may new ferry line is open from vladivostok to sakaiminato (i don't sure about right spelling ) it's south of japan. we want to make an interest way through japan to the north and to the south again for 7 -10 days.
i'll try to contact a community, we need good POI over there. may 2009, we was in south korea and bmw community there was very friendly and helpfull for us. i hope in japan will same
and of couse, we are closer. welcome here!

Hello,

It`s my first step by Horizont. Before I used "motorkarawane". I am looking for information and also for a partner(s) by traveling through Sibiria. I want to go early 2010, but not too early, becauce the winter in Sibiria takes time.

it all depends from where to where and how you want to go (flight - ship). So some more info would be highly appreciated. I recommend Chris in Tokyo to talk to (don't want to overburden the guy). Also Mammut 25rus has lots of experience helping RTW bikers.

Diethard, a German who came via Vladivostok to Japan with his BMW GS 800 (stayed with us for 3 days) is leaving today for Vancouver, Canada - flight. He had to pay soemthing like Euro 3.800 for the bike to be flown over there (including everything, like customs, crate etc.). He used a Tokyo based shipping agent.

Don't really know whether or not this helps, but I found these two websites today:

The second one is just general information, but it also gives you some info concerning shipping.

Well, if you have come up with something, maybe you can post it here again for future RTW riders?!?!

had a e/mail back from Fescao viktor_katsubiy@lines.fesco.ru telling me that they dont ship direct from vladivostok to the usa but they can from yokohama , now looking at korea (note viktor email starts viktor_katsubiy)

shipping across the pacific is much cheaper out of korea.
last year, japan wanted 14usd per kg, where as korea it was 4usd per kg.
shipping my bike to seattle, with crating, trucking crate to airport, etc was 2200usd
I have shipped KR-US twice, the 1st time the guy was a crook.
last year I found Wendy Choi. She is awesome!
Im in bulgaria now, & dont have her contact info with me, but I think its on the board here somewhere

Also, if you take a ferry out of vladi, be prepared for 3 days time & alot of fees.

If you go Zarubino-sochko, its fast & easy.
Theres also a ferry from sakhalin island to hokkaido, but I didnt know about it in time.

Here is some info concerning the Sakhalin ferry - don't know whether or not it is uptodate: Hokkaido, Japan to Russia via Sakhalin Island: possible and awesome - Lonely Planet travel forum

Diethard, a German on a RTW came from Vladivostok via Seoul to Sakaiminato in Japan. He indicated that it was the most convenient way. Maybe "cyber-zebb" can contact him directly for more info (mail is: d.am-ende(at)gmx.de - just replace the (at) with @). He is now in Vancouver, Canada. Maybe if you can make the mail short and painless he will be able to answer in a free moment. Hope this helps??

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.
