getting to australia from russia

Hi i am new to travelling by bikes but i have just ridden from ireland to Irkutsk in russia in my suzuki rv 125. My original plan was to return to ireland via mingolia and kazakhstan but i have decided that i would like to continue on to australia. I haven't got a huge budget so what would be my best option? Or is it even possible maybe i should have organised this from ireland months ago. Any information would be hugely appreciated

Best bet is to Ferry from Vlad to South Korea and ship from there.

Contact Yuri Melnikov in Vlad ymelnik at links-ltd.com

And Wendy Choi in South Korea wendychoi2 at gmail.com

Good choice BTW, much nicer ride through Eastern Russia than back through Northern Kaz.

Stop at Baikal on the way to Ulan Ude.

Hi from Darwin, be aware that Australia is mega expensive. We were prepared, but after 7 Month SEA it was still a shock, actually for everybody who arrives in AU... it´s not only the petrol, EVERYTHING... if you live "on a shoestring" I would guess you will need around min. 60AUD a day pP (no Cigarettes (1 pack 22AUD) and no alcohol), but this is debatable...

cheers Mate....

East Russia from Irkutsk onwards was my favourite part of the country- mainly for the extremely friendly and outgoing people I met.

Regarding Australia the biggest issue you have to face is you need a carnet to bring the bike into the country (plus the strict quarantine rules that means even with a carnet you need to clean it to be like new). If you haven't got one and can bear to part with it a practical plan might be to sell the bike in Russia, S. Korea or SE Asia before flying the last leg into Australia. Good luck with the planning.

Maybe think about somewhere other than Darwin. Amongst the dearest cities in Australia (especially if you discount the mining towns). I would have thought that most ROROs go to Sydney, Brisbane or Melbourne anyway.

Membership - help keep us going!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
