Latest info on Uzbek-Kyrg border
Just thought I'd give an update as we've trying to cross from Uzbekistan into Kyrgyzstan this week. Before leaving Tashkent we checked with the police and authorities in and around Osh to get the latest as we were hearing such varied reports.
The news that came back was very positive with the police in Osh saying the border is indeed open so off we set down the Furgana valley where the news was confirmed to us at the various checkpoints. Excellent!
Well, it was until we arrived at the border at Namangan to be told that the border and all others with Kyrgyzstan are most definitely closed! Bummer! No amount of reasoning with the guards was going to change the situation so we rode back to Tashkent to get a Kazak visa. The police here in Tashkent, the British Embassy and the Ministry of Interior Affairs (who control the border!) all told us we were mistaken and that the border was open despite our claims we'd been turned away! Only after 3 hours of invesitgating (prompted by the embassy) did the Ministry admit that they were mistaken and that all borders with Kyrg are currently closed!
So, if you're heading that way, don't listen to the police, the government or anyone else, the border is most definitely closed!.......(of course this is subject to change at any time and withour anyone actually knowing about it!....)
