Maps for North-West Russia?
Hello!
Any advice where to get either digital or paper maps for North-West Russia? Nato, Nasa, aviation etc. might do...

If you want to use the roads/tracks/paths etc in that part of Russia, I would get the "Russian Road Atlas" - available in Dom Knigi in either St Petersburg or Moscow (and other bookshops). I used the 2004 edition to travel from Magadan to Neryingri and it shows distances and locations of petrol stations (mostly reliable). That part of the atlas is in 1:3000000 scale though (no problems for me)
My copy has an email address for the publisher - let me know if you want this and I'll email it to you.

Make sure the towns are in Cyrillic on your Map, that way you will be able to follow the signs!

I have a road map UKRAIN,BELORUSSIA AND WESTERNN RUSSIA, printed by Bartholomew -world travel map series scale 1:2000 000.It is both English and Crylic ( also has a crylic to english translation graph) has enough detail to navigate by road to most places and has small villages and towns clearly marked. Cost £6.00 at a local bookshop (Ordered) I dont know if they do another map North to Murmansk as this only goes 100 miles North of St Petersburg, But My Maps of Northern Scandinavia and Finland cover The very North west of Russia also.

The challenge with with maps available in Finland is, that they are not accurate! There are plenty of roads on the map which do not exist in reality!

Simmo is 100% spot on. Get a road book with Cyrillic type it makes it so easy to pinpoint where you are. We arrived in Vladivostok and found a Russian road Atlas in a book shop and took off to Moscow. No problems.

Defence Mapping
This info is from my website and is from a couple of years ago ... I cant vouch for the accuracy of it now, but if someone does contact them, please let me know if the details are still good.
They are excellent quality topographical maps in a very high level of detail, of all of Russia, Mongolia, China, et al. If topographical maps are what you need (for whatever reason) in lieu of road atlases, then these are awesome.
"Most places now have good motoring maps but it doesn't hurt to stock up before you go for unmapped or poorly mapped places. The whole world is mapped out by the US Department of Defence and you can buy maps called TPCs from them (about 0.75 x 1.00 metres each) from about $5 a map. This Tactical Pilotage Chart series maps the world at a 1:500,000 scale but they can be a pain in the butt to track down unless you go direct to the source. They are also at least 3 times the price if you try to buy them from anywhere else. Email them at 9-AMC-chartsales@faa.gov or call +1 301 436 8301."

Surely, a quick weekend trip across the border to StP to look in bookshops is all that is required? There are a large number of topographical maps available in Russia. There is quite a long discussion about maps under the Zilow Gap thread on this forum.
The best maps are 1:200,000 produced by the central experimental war map factory located at Building 9 , Ulitsa Bolshoi Polianka Moscow. I **know** they do maps at that scale of leningradskaya oblast (east and west) and the leningradskaya peretik (between StP and Finland) and murmansk oblast and archangelsk oblast. These maps like as not available in StP. A road atlas would show distances but is likely not to show as much detail as these maps. My own view is that whilst the above maps are not 100% up to date, they are from the "war" map factory and are probably okay. I have used the same company's maps to travel quite a bit (I have about 25 of them) and they all seem okay excpet obviously new roads in the last 5 years or so.
