There are a number of towns on the way - about 5 I counted.

Its 750klms from UB to Erinhot (Erlian) on the border. All the towns will have fuel, but its probably low octane. The longest stretch between towns is Saynshand to the the border village of Dzamin Uud... about 250 klms.

There is no food or shops in these towns. They are really grim. Just alcoholics.

China is unlikely to let you in on a motorbike. Even if they do, you will probably be stopped around Jining and be arrested and deported.

I went the other way, from China to UB.
www.TokyotoLondon.com has details and pics.

The road is bitumen as far as Nalayh ... which is the first 20klms of the 750. From there is just wheel ruts through the sand. The first day riding south will be pretty good... you can ride in the grasslands beside the tracks. Its smoother. Patches can get quite sandy and tough the further south you go. If it has been raining it gets pretty muddy.

I found the hospitality of the nomads in the gers (yurts) very good. They always share food and water. But the towns / villages are grim.

Colebatch's info on the Ulanbaatar-China route is correct. It is basically a track, not a road.

And getting a bike into China (legally) is all but impossible. See some of the other threads in this "Asia" area for lots of info on people who have tried various ways of getting bikes into China.

I live in Ulaanbaatar, so let me know if you have any more questions about Mongolia.

Membership - help keep us going!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
