Murmansk area or Nenets Autonomous region

Hi,

I'm thinking of doing a 10 day trip (10 days there, the to and fro is extra) in this area.

I'm hoping to find 000's of km of mud etc.!

Does anyone have any experience of riding about there - info is VERY difficult to come by!

Sam.

Two estonians did it this year. The route was following:

Some of their pics from the trip can be found here to see that part of the World.

Don't know how much it "harmonizes" with your planning, but the dirt you can find EVERYWHERE if you just want to, basically turning off the main road is more than enough in this part of World .

Hope this helps...

Cheers, Margus

Margus,

Thanks for that, I'll contact them.

I'm actually angling more for the end of the Kola peninsula, SE of Murmansk, right down to the White Sea - REALLY out of the way!

We'll see where my research takes me!

Sam.

I recommend you to turn in Kandalaksha to right and pass 250 km along the northern coast of Beloye (White) sea till the village Kuzomen (the Varzuga River outfall).
See the red line on the map http://www.palermo.ru/vladimir/kolsky_2005/

In some point it's better to go right along the beach because of small send desert. Then you can turn along the Varzuga River to village Varzuga and back to Kandalaksha. On return way to Kandalaksh you can turn to the north in Umba (we couldn't go there by 2WD car).
The Barents Sea cost is closed by militaries. Being Russian you could get the pass to it, but unfortunatelly it is impossible for foreigners. Photos: http://www.palermo.ru/vladimir/kolsk...ntsy/index.htm

Kola enduro track

Hi!
Kola peninsula is ideal region for off-road raiding. But after middle of jun. earlier there is very much voter and on mountain tracks will bee snow. I was in Kola peninsula two times. And will go in next summer to.
You can ride from Revda to Oktjabrskij along loan railway. You can raid up to Lovozerskije Tundri mountains. You can ride up to Hibini mountains and raid to Umbozerskij mountain pas. You can raid from Oktjabrskij to Umba by old road. (real off road. Good army maps is obligation)
Road from Kandalaksa to Varzuga is normal gravel road. After river Hlebnaja, or where you like, you can turn to right from the road to the old road on see side. This old road is really off-road. There you can see some photos from previous kola enduro adventure "Nord Quest 2008" Adventurer - Photos

Hi Martini,

4 years later, and we're on! We'll be on the peninsula 10-20 July - when will you be there?

Sam.

Wee will go to Kola 25.08-08.09. Do you need some help or support or guide in your trip?

Hi Martini,

Thank you for the offer, but we're working with Aleksandr Sibrin on this one.

Shame we'll miss each other this year, but perhaps in 2010??!!

Regards, Sam.

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive.
